Bust of Amerigo Vespucci [Americo Vespucio]. Vespucci was an Italian merchant, explorer, and navigator from the Republic of Florence. Between 1497 and 1504, Vespucci participated in at least two voyages exploring the coast of the New World, first on behalf of Spain and then for Portugal.
