The Zanzibar red colobus (Piliocolobus kirkii), also known as Kirk's red colobus, is endemic to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago. This monkey is mainly a foliovore, which has a preference for young leaves. They also eat leaf shoots, seeds, flowers, and unripe fruit. Certain groups of Colobus have been seen to eat charcoal and it is thought that they do so to aid their digestion of toxins found in certain of the leaves they eat. It is one of the few species that do not eat ripe fruits. Photographed in Zanzibar
