Granite arch. View of a granite arch in a mountainous area. Arches such as these are formed by the faster erosion of soft rock than surrounding harder rock. The erosion of the rock is mainly due to the abrasive effects of wind- blown sand. Other sources of erosion include periodic, heavy downpours of rain, and extreme temperatures. Photographed at Spitzkoppe, Namibia.
