  • William Dampier (baptised 5 September 1651; died March 1715) was an English explorer, pirate, privateer, navigator, and naturalist who became the first Englishman to explore parts of what is today Australia, and the first person to circumnavigate the world three times. He has also been described as Australia's first natural historian, as well as one of the most important British explorers of the period between Francis Drake (16th century) and James Cook (18th century), he "bridged those two eras" with a mix of piratical derring-do of the former and scientific inquiry of the later. His expeditions were among the first to identify and name a number of plants, animals, foods, and cooking techniques for a European audience; being among the first English writers to use words such as avocado, barbecue, and chopsticks. In describing the preparation of avocados, he was the first European to describe the making of guacamole, named the breadfruit plant, and made frequent documentation of the taste of numerous foods foreign to the European palate such as flamingo and manatee. After impressing the Admiralty with his book A New Voyage Round the World, Dampier was given command of a Royal Navy ship and made important discoveries in western Australia, before being court-martialled for cruelty. On a later voyage he rescued Alexander Selkirk, a former crewmate who may have inspired Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Others influenced by Dampier include James Cook, Horatio Nelson, Charles Darwin, and Alfred Russel Wallace. from The Exploration of the World, Celebrated Travels and Travellers, Celebrated Voyages by Jules Verne nonfiction. Published in three volumes from 1878 to 1880, Celebrated Travels and Travelers is a history of the explorers and adventurers who voyaged to the far reaches of the globe, discovered the wonders of exotic lands, and filled in the blank spaces on the world map. • Otto von Guericke [Otto de Querike] (1602 – 1686) was a German scientist, inventor, and politician. His pioneering scientific work, the development of experimental methods and repeatable demonstrations on the physics of the vacuum, atmospheric pressure, electrostatic repulsion, his advocacy for the reality of "action at a distance" and of "absolute space" were remarkable contributions for the advancement of the Scientific Revolution. From the book La ciencia y sus hombres : vidas de los sabios ilustres desde la antigüedad hasta el siglo XIX T. 3 [Science and its men: lives of the illustrious sages from antiquity to the 19th century Vol 3] By by Figuier, Louis, (1819-1894); Casabó y Pagés, Pelegrín, n. 1831 Published in Barcelona by D. • English Warship Firing a Salute, 1690, Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) Netherlands, 17th century, Oil on canvas<br />
The subject of this painting is a Royal English Navy ship firing a salute to a state barge. The ship depicted here, may be the sixth-rate frigate called the Saudadoes, which was frequently used to carry individuals or parties on official missions. The designation "sixth-rate" indicates that the ship carried 18-28 cannon, which can be detected from the smoke billowing out from the port side of the vessel. It is possible that Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) was familiar with the Saudodoes as there is a drawing of the ship, made by his father, which is now in the British Museum. Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1693) was a specialist in pen and ink drawings of marine vessels. He would spend time at sea making sketches of individual ships and the maneuvers of the fleet, which formed the basis of the Younger's oil paintings. Throughout their careers the two artists collaborated on a myriad of images.

His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. • Portrait of Sir Isaac Newton, English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, philosopher by Sir Godfrey Kneller (English school) 1702. Newton's (1643-1727) discoveries were prolific and exerted a huge influence on science and thought. His theories of gravity and his three laws of motion were outlined in his greatest work, Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, (1687) and he is credited with discovering differential calculus. He also formulated theories regarding optics and the nature of light that led to him building the first reflecting telescope. Knighted by Queen Anne in 1705, Newton is buried in Westminster Abbey, London.
