  • olive oil press at Kursi, Israel Kursi is the Arabic name for the ruin on the eastern shores of the Sea of Galilee, Israel. During the mishnaic and talmudic periods this was a Jewish fishing village. Excavations revealed the remnants of the largest Byzantine-period monastery in Israel (123 by 145 meters). The monastery and the church inside it were built in the middle of the fifth century C.E. In the church, archeologists found a mosaic floor with pictures of animals (chickens, geese, doves, cormorants, and fish), and plants such as citrons, dates, pomegranates, and grapes. According to the New Testament, Jesus healed a man possessed by demons in Kursi. Mark relates that when Jesus disembarked from his boat, a "man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him." A herd of swine was grazing in the area and Jesus cast the demonic spirits from the man to the swine. The swine then ran into the Sea of Galilee and drowned (Mark 5: 1-20)

  • English Warship Firing a Salute, 1690, Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) Netherlands, 17th century, Oil on canvas<br />
The subject of this painting is a Royal English Navy ship firing a salute to a state barge. The ship depicted here, may be the sixth-rate frigate called the Saudadoes, which was frequently used to carry individuals or parties on official missions. The designation "sixth-rate" indicates that the ship carried 18-28 cannon, which can be detected from the smoke billowing out from the port side of the vessel. It is possible that Willem van de Velde the Younger (1633-1707) was familiar with the Saudodoes as there is a drawing of the ship, made by his father, which is now in the British Museum. Willem van de Velde the Elder (1611-1693) was a specialist in pen and ink drawings of marine vessels. He would spend time at sea making sketches of individual ships and the maneuvers of the fleet, which formed the basis of the Younger's oil paintings. Throughout their careers the two artists collaborated on a myriad of images.

  • The Four Seasons (1850) by Henry Picou (French, 1824-1895) Jean-Leon Gerome (French, 1824-1904) Gustave Rodolphe Boulanger (French, 1824-1888) Jean-Louis Hamon (French, 1821-1874). Oil on fabric The artists who painted this work belonged to a group called the Neo-Grecs (New Greeks). They concentrated on depicting scenes of daily life in ancient Greece and Rome—often with an erotic slant. Here, relying on a popular Greco-Roman theme, the four works represent the seasons and their associated activities: the pursuit of love in spring; bathing in summer; harvesting grapes in fall; and a funerary ritual in winter. The decorative gold, black, and red borders also enhance the classical aspect of the work by recalling the painted wall decorations of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The artists painted this work for their friend, French actor Edmond Got (1822–1901). They likely presented this picture to him in commemoration of his election to the Comédie- Francaise acting company and as a memento of their friendship.
