  • Description of the frontispiece illustrating heraldry. A female figure, representing heraldry, and adorned with the insignia of the principal king of arms, draws aside the veil which time had thrown over the transactions of past ages, and discloses the monuments, and other precious remains, of antiquity. On her left side is placed a knight of the crusades in a contemplative and appropriate attitude, and in complete mail-armour; at his feet an ancient shield and helmet, contrasting the warlike implements of more modern times. On the fore-ground two genii sit by, and hold, insignia of naval, military, and civil, honours. Above the principal figure, other genii support the arms of the corporation of heralds, those of the present garter, and a medallion inscribed with the names of such as have most distinguished themselves in the science of heraldry.
